When is the treatment relevant?
Both the nipple and the areola play an important role in the breast's overall appearance and symmetry. Surgery may be relevant in cases of an enlarged areola, when proportions are perceived as unbalanced in relation to the breast size, or with inverted nipples that can cause breastfeeding difficulties or other functional issues. Treatment may also be considered for large or protruding nipples that cause physical discomfort or are perceived as aesthetically disruptive.
Surgical correction may also be relevant in cases of asymmetry between the breasts, for example, after a previous breast lift or breast reduction. In some cases, reconstruction is needed after surgery or trauma, or after a mastectomy, where the nipple and areola can be surgically recreated or restored with the help of medical tattooing performed by a specialized partner.
