Common reasons for explantation

Common reasons for explantation include the patient no longer wishing to have implants, changes in the shape of the breasts, and capsular contracture that can occur as a result of inflammation. In some cases, explantation may also be relevant for symptoms linked to Breast Implant Illness (BII) or in the case of diagnosed BIA-ALCL, a rare form of lymphoma associated with breast implants.*

The surgery takes up to two hours but can take longer and is more complex if the capsule around the implant must be removed. Capsule formation is the body's natural reaction to foreign material, where a membrane forms around the implant. This capsule can sometimes become inflamed or develop into a pathological change that requires removal.

In rare cases, the capsule can become the site of cancer development, such as lymphoma in patients with textured implants. In these cases, it is important that the entire capsule is removed along with the implant.

When volume has decreased after explantation, the breasts can be reshaped using techniques from breast lifts or reconstruction.
