About the treatment
Gynecomastia means that a man develops enlarged breasts. This can be due to an increased amount of breast gland tissue, fatty tissue, or a combination of both. For many men, this can be experienced as distressing and affect both self-confidence and quality of life.
Many patients experience that the shape of the breasts does not change despite exercise and weight loss. In these cases, a gynecomastia surgery, also called male breast reduction, can be an effective solution.
The goal of the surgery is to reduce the volume of the breast and create a more masculine breast shape.
Depending on the anatomy of the breast, the surgeon may use different techniques. In many cases, several methods are combined to achieve the best possible result.
Removal of mammary gland
If the enlargement is primarily due to mammary gland tissue, this can be removed through a small incision at the edge of the areola. This makes it possible to reduce the volume while preserving a natural breast shape.
Liposuction of the breast
In some patients, the breast enlargement consists mainly of fatty tissue. In these cases, liposuction can be used to remove excess fat and shape the breast.
Removal of excess skin
In cases of more pronounced gynecomastia, the skin may have become stretched. In these cases, it may also be necessary to remove excess skin to achieve an optimal result.
Discreet scars
In gynecomastia surgery, the incisions are placed as discreetly as possible, usually at the edge of the areola, in the breast fold, or through small incisions used for liposuction. Over time, the scars fade in most patients and become less visible.
