When is neck lift with Z-plasty used?

Z-plasty is used in certain situations where a more limited procedure can provide a clear improvement. The method may be suitable for patients with loose skin along the midline of the neck, or who experience visible neck bands and platysmal bands. It can also be an alternative for those who wish to improve the contour of the neck in a gentler way.

In many cases, a traditional neck lift is the most effective treatment, especially when there is more pronounced excess skin. However, Z-plasty can be a good option for patients who prefer a smaller procedure and a more limited intervention.

The method is also used in some cases for patients who cannot undergo a longer surgery under general anesthesia, for example due to medical conditions. In these cases, a shorter procedure under local anesthesia may be a more suitable and safer alternative.

Scars after Z-plasty

Since the technique involves an incision on the front of the neck, the surgery leaves a scar in the shape of the letter Z. This scar shape is used in plastic surgery because it can reduce tension in the skin, improve tissue mobility, and distribute the scar more naturally in the direction of the skin.

Over time, the scar fades in most patients and gradually becomes less visible. During the consultation, we always discuss how the scar can be expected to develop and what the healing process typically looks like.
